Siddipet, July, 22 : Transport and BC Welfare Minister Ponnam Prabhakar led a massive ‘Maha Dharna’ at Ambedkar Chowk in Husnabad on Wednesday to protest the preventive detention of Opposition Leader Rahul Gandhi, AICC President Mallikarjun Kharge, Priyanka Gandhi, and over a hundred Congress MPs in New Delhi. The agitation was organized following a nationwide call by the Congress leadership to condemn the police crackdown on peaceful student demonstrations against the NEET paper leak.
Addressing the gathering, Minister Ponnam Prabhakar slammed the NDA government for acting high-handedly against senior opposition leaders who were protesting peacefully outside the Prime Minister’s residence. He stated that the police lathi-charge on protesting students at Jantar Mantar in Delhi recalled the spirit of the Indian freedom struggle and Satyagraha, condemning the physical violence inflicted on young aspirants demanding justice for their futures.
During the protest, Congress leaders and cadres held placards demanding the immediate resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan over the widespread NEET paper leak controversy. The Minister questioned why Prime Minister Narendra Modi was protecting Dharmendra Pradhan instead of holding him accountable for the widespread exam irregularities that led to severe stress and suicides among several student applicants across the country.
Minister Prabhakar placed a set of key demands before the Central government, including an immediate parliamentary discussion on the NEET irregularities, a comprehensive probe into the Delhi police lathi-charge, and financial ex-gratia compensation for the families of students who tragically died by suicide following the paper leak. He warned that as the party that brought independence, the Congress will continue to stand as the guardian of democracy and fight alongside the youth until justice is delivered.
