The handloom artisan Veldi Hariprasad created a world record by weaving a saree that fits inside a matchbox in three hours in Rajanna Sircilla district
Rajanna Sircilla, August 03 : In a remarkable demonstration of traditional craftsmanship ahead of National Handloom Day, local handloom artisan Veldi Hariprasad created a world record by weaving a full-length saree that folds to fit inside a matchbox in less than three hours here in Rajanna Sircilla district on Monday.
The live demonstration took place at Hariprasad Handlooms in Jyothi Nagar, Sircilla town. Operating a traditional handloom continuously without breaks, Hariprasad completed the 5.5-meter-long, 45-inch-wide saree in just 2 hours and 50 minutes, surpassing his initial target of 210 minutes (3.5 hours). He then demonstrated his artisan skill by carefully folding the entire saree into a small matchbox measuring 12 cm by 6.5 cm by 2.5 cm.
While standard handloom sarees typically take three to four days to weave, Hariprasad spent nearly a year practicing specifically for this feat to maintain intense focus and continuous weaving speed without fatigue. Local residents and fellow weavers gathered in large numbers to witness the live session and applauded his achievement upon completion.
Speaking after the event, Hariprasad stated that the initiative aims to highlight the rich heritage of Indian textiles, showcase the extraordinary skills of Telangana artisans on national and international platforms, and inspire younger generations to appreciate handloom weaving.
