Warangal Sept.21 : A shocking incident of medical negligence came to light at the Wardhannapet Area Hospital in Warangal district after rats nibbled on the eye of a deceased man kept in the hospital mortuary for a post-mortem examination. The incident, caused by a complete lack of basic amenities like freezers and electricity in the facility, triggered outrage among the victim’s family members and local residents.
According to police, Gare Veeraiah (58), a resident of the Double Bedroom Colony in Rayaparthi mandal headquarters, died in a road accident on Saturday, September 19, 2026, after being hit by an unidentified vehicle along the highway. Rayaparthi police shifted his body to the Wardhannapet Area Hospital mortuary near Sangepu Vagu for a post-mortem. However, as duty doctors had already left for the day, the body was placed on a table inside the locked mortuary room overnight.
On Sunday morning, when medical staff unlocked the room to perform the autopsy, they discovered that rats had severely bitten the upper portion of the victim’s eye. Family members expressed anger over the hospital’s severe lack of infrastructure and cold-storage freezers, accusing officials of apathy. Images of the damaged corpse circulated widely on social media platforms, drawing public criticism over the maintenance of government healthcare infrastructure.
