Rajanna Sircilla, Aug.24 : District Collector Garima Agarwal spearheaded an awareness, identification, and eradication programme targeting invasive alien weeds at the District Collectorate premises. Organised by the ECO FAWN Society, the drive witnessed active participation from Additional Collectors, department heads, and government staff. Participants physically identified and cleared invasive plants across the office campus to promote environmental cleanliness.
To mark the launch of the environmental movement, all attendees displayed a symbolic “Thumbs Down” gesture, signifying their united pledge to halt the spread of non-native invasive species and protect native biodiversity. Speaking at the event, ECO FAWN Society CEO Mettu Sai Sampath highlighted that invasive weeds severely damage agriculture, forests, and rural livelihoods by reducing crop yields, choking local water bodies, suppressing native flora, and increasing forest fire hazards.
District Collector Garima Agarwal commended the ECO FAWN Society for raising awareness on this critical ecological threat. She urged government officials and the general public to actively participate in maintaining weed-free premises and safeguarding local ecosystems. State Coordinator Talari Vikram and other key representatives were also present during the drive.
The event concluded with all participating officers and staff taking a solemn collective pledge to consistently work toward eradicating invasive plant species, conserving indigenous biodiversity, and building widespread environmental awareness across the district.
