Karimnagar, July 20 : The Karimnagar Two Town police have registered a criminal case against the owner of Srinika Pet Shop in Vidyanagar for severe animal cruelty and operating without a valid license. The action follows an official complaint filed by the members of the Stray Animal Foundation of India, an animal welfare NGO.
The police registered FIR No. 419/2026 on Monday under Sections 11(1)(a), 11(1)(k), and 38(3) of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960, read with the Pet Shop Rules, 2018, as well as relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023.
According to the complaint lodged by Adulapuram Goutham, a Cruelty Prevention Manager with the NGO, the establishment has been displaying and selling animals without the mandatory registration from the Telangana State Animal Welfare Board. An inspection of the premises revealed that several species of birds and animals were being kept in overcrowded, closed, and poorly ventilated cages.
The complainant highlighted that the animals were denied basic necessities, with no provision for food or drinking water inside their enclosures. Several animals and birds appeared visibly weak, diseased, and distressed due to the unhygienic and confined conditions, directly violating mandatory statutory welfare standards.
The NGO has urged the authorities to immediately seize the distressed animals under the Care and Maintenance of Case Property Animals Rules, 2017. They have requested that a Government Veterinary Officer examine and treat the rescued animals, and that the Telangana State Animal Welfare Board be formally notified to ensure the permanent closure of the illegal establishment.
