Hanumakonda, Sept.27 : Kaloji Narayana Rao University of Health Sciences (KNRUHS) has revoked the Scheduled Tribe (ST) reservation status of 37 MBBS and BDS aspirants for the 2026–27 academic year. The university reclassified them under the Open Category following an official report from the Tribal Welfare Department, which determined that their families had migrated to Telangana from other states and regions, making them ineligible for state-specific ST benefits.
The Tribal Welfare Department’s investigation revealed that although the candidates held ST certificates issued in Telangana, their family backgrounds, ancestral origins, and migration histories spanning regions like Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra, and Karnataka did not meet state reservation criteria under Section 95 of the AP Reorganisation Act and relevant judicial precedents.
Acting on the department’s September 22 findings, the university cancelled the medical seat allotments of nine candidates who had already secured MBBS seats under the ST quota in the first two counselling rounds across various government and private medical colleges.
The nine cancelled MBBS seats will now be treated as vacant and included in the third/mop-up phase of counselling for eligible candidates based on merit. While all 37 candidates remain eligible to compete under the Open Category, the development has raised serious questions regarding the initial verification and certificate issuance process by revenue authorities.
