Jangaon, Sept.24 : In a shocking incident reflecting poor sanitation in government residential institutions, 14 girl students were bitten by rodents while sleeping at the Telangana Social Welfare Residential School and College (TSWRIS) in Palakurthi mandal headquarters of Jangaon district. The incident occurred on Tuesday night, September 22, 2026, but came to light late on Thursday after affected students received medical treatment.
The victims, studying in Classes 8, 9, and 10, were asleep in their dormitory after dinner when rodents bit their hands and feet. Awakening to pain, the girls spotted rats inside the room and reported the matter to In-charge Principal Varalaxmi the following morning. Following instructions from higher officials, the school ANM shifted all 14 students to the local Government Community Health Centre (CHC). Medical Superintendent Dr. Vanam Srinivas confirmed that doctors conducted thorough health check-ups and administered Anti-Rabies and Tetanus Toxoid (TT) vaccinations to all the affected girls, stating their condition remains stable.
The incident has highlighted severe sanitation lapses on the residential school campus. Staff members disclosed that accumulated garbage, choked drainage lines, and overgrown wild bushes around the premises have led to an infestation of rats and venomous insects. In-charge Principal Varalaxmi reportedly submitted official representations to local MLA Mamidala Yashaswini Reddy, the Tahsildar, and the MPDO seeking immediate sanitation interventions. Deeply concerned over the safety and health of their children, parents have demanded urgent measures from district authorities to clean the campus and prevent recurring incidents.
