Adilabad, Sept.12 : The Union Government has decided to fast-track the development of a joint-user airfield in Adilabad as part of an initiative to expand air infrastructure across Northern Telangana. The proposed facility will serve both civilian commercial flights and Indian Air Force (IAF) operations, featuring a 9,000-foot (2.75 km) runway capable of handling large aircraft.
To support the project, the Telangana state government has sanctioned ₹2,278.14 crore for land acquisition and utility shifting. A total of 2,009 acres is being acquired, comprising 1,609 acres for defence purposes and 400 acres for civilian aviation facilities. Union Ministers G. Kishan Reddy, Rajnath Singh, and K. Rammohan Naidu recently reviewed the project’s progress and set a target to complete all land acquisition procedures by December 2026.
Union Minister Kishan Reddy announced that a three-member nodal committee—comprising representatives from the Ministry of Defence, the Ministry of Civil Aviation, and the Government of Telangana—will be constituted to expedite the Master Plan and Detailed Project Report (DPR). The project is expected to spur economic growth, tourism, and employment opportunities across North Telangana while reducing travel dependence on Hyderabad’s Rajiv Gandhi International Airport. Similar airport development initiatives are also progressing at Mamnoor in Warangal, along with proposals for Peddapalli and Bhadradri Kothagudem.
