Nizamabad, July 29 : A leisure trip ended in tragedy when four youths, including a 17-year-old minor, drowned in the backwaters of the Sriramsagar Project (SRSP) in Nizamabad district on Sunday. A group of five friends had visited the location for an outing when four of them were swept away by strong currents.
According to police sources, the tragedy unfolded when 17-year-old Arhan, a resident of Bhokar in Nanded district, Maharashtra, accidentally fell into the rapidly flowing water. Seeing him struggle in the current, three of his friends—Kaleem (24), Ammu alias Najuwath (24), and Azeem (24), all residents of Autonagar in Nizamabad—entered the water in a desperate attempt to rescue him but were also carried away by the force of the flow.
Upon receiving the alert, Nizamabad Police Commissioner Sai Chaitanya and a team of officers rushed to the site to coordinate emergency efforts. A joint rescue operation was immediately launched involving the police, revenue department, Fire Services, National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), and expert divers. Search teams have recovered three bodies so far and sent them to a nearby government hospital for post-mortem, while intensive search efforts continue to locate the fourth missing person.
Following the incident, local police registered a case and launched a probe. Authorities issued a stern advisory warning tourists against venturing into deep or unknown waters, taking selfies, or swimming near reservoirs, canals, and project backwaters.
