Jangaon, July 17 : An elderly woman was swindled of Rs.11 lakh by conmen who lured her with a fraudulent offer of gold at half the prevailing market price in Kanneboinagudem village of Narmetta mandal in Jangaon district.
According to the police, the victim, identified as Yellamma, fell for the fraudsters’ convincing pitch and handed over her lifetime savings of Rs 11 lakh. In return, the cheats handed her 18 tolas of what they claimed were genuine gold biscuits and quickly fled the spot.
Suspecting foul play, Yellamma’s son-in-law later took the blocks to a local jewelry shop for testing. The jeweler confirmed that the biscuits were fake, consisting of cheap brass and copper with a gold plating.
A devastated Yellamma subsequently lodged a formal complaint with the local police, who have registered a case and launched a hunt for the absconding fraudsters.
Following the incident, the police issued an advisory urging the rural residents, especially the elderly and illiterate, to remain highly vigilant. They cautioned the public not to trust strangers offering cheap gold or claiming to sell excavated hidden treasures, urging them to buy gold only from certified showrooms.
